Avenham Walks - Stop 8 - Sir Robert Peel

Cut through the park to the east side of the Square to the statue of Sir Robert Peel (Stop 8), erected on 31st May 1852. The son of a Lancashire cotton spinner, he became Prime Minister from 1841-1846. He was regarded as a 'Champion of the People' for his repeal of the Corn Laws.

The statue was unveiled by the Mayor of Preston, Thomas Monk. However, his name was removed from the monument after he was found guilty at his trial in 1858 of forging a will.
