Avenham Walks - Stop 3 - Arkwright House

On the corner of Stoneygate is Arkwright House (Stop 3), an elegant looking Georgian building. The house, being quite close to the old Grammar school on Stoneygate and Syke Hill, at one time provided accommodation for the Masters employed at the school. In 1768, it was in rooms to the rear of this house that Richard Arkwright worked diligently on his design for his patented Water Frame, a mechanically operated cotton- spinning machine. While this invention brought both fame and fortune to Richard Arkwright, it also contributed to a boom in the cotton trade. The mechanisation of spinning and weaving led to Preston's 19th Century industrialisation.
