![]() Avenham Walks - Stop B - Cardinal Newman College |
|
The trail then leads past Cardinal Newman College (Stop B), formerly Larkhill, which holds an important and fondly remembered place in the history of Preston. Not only was this the residence of the great pioneering family - the Horrockses - it was also the home of the Larkhill Convent, having been sold in 1860 to St Augustine's. They remained there until 1978 when Larkhill became Newman College, thus signalling an end to Larkhill's long years of residence. Although the college has undergone many changes, the bow-fronted section of the college are retained from the original Georgian mansion built during 1796-7. The college grounds still has the original lake surrounded by an abundance of mature trees and vegetation. |
