Avenham Walks - Stop A - St. Augustine's Church

From Frenchwood Street, cut across the short path on the right to Tenby Road and follow the trail, which leads past the new Mosque, built in 1984, to St Augustine's Church (Stop A).

The Church is a grade II listed building, built by the architect A Tuach. The foundation stone was laid on 13th November 1838 and Rev Dr Briggs officially opened the Church on 30th July 1840.

The church functioned until 1984, when major structural problems were identified. The church was closed in 1985. The church, now unsafe and beyond repair, is in the redevelopment programme for the area. While its two dominant Roman Ionic Portico towers remain as a reminder of the past, the new building at the rear will provide sports, recreational and leisure facilities for residents of the area.
